In the morning of Nov. 12, 2022, the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Awards were announced and presented at the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Young Scientists Summit in Wenzhou. Yu Yu, Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering and Director of the Computer Science Division of Zhiyuan Honors Program (John Hopcroft Class), was granted with the award.

Established in 1987, the China Youth Science and Technology Award aims to recognize and reward young scientific and technological talents who have made outstanding achievements in the country's economic development, social progress and scientific and technological innovation, and train a number of young academic and technological leaders who have entered the world's scientific and technological frontier. The award, proposed by Qian Xuesen and other older scientists, was jointly established and implemented by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the China Association for Science and Technology and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. China Youth Science and Technology Awards are held every two years, and no more than 100 people are honored each time.

Yu Yu is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at SJTU. His research interests are related to cryptography theory. He received his bachelor's degree from Fudan University in 2003 and his PhD degree from Nanyang Technological University in 2006. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Leuven in Belgium. After returning to China in 2011, he lectured at East China Normal University and Tsinghua University respectively. He has worked as committee member of CRYPTO, EUROCRYPT, ASIACRYPT and CCS for ten times and was invited to deliver speeches at ASIACRYPT 2021 and the Annual Conference of the Chinese Cryptology Society (2016,2018,2021) and the Annual Conference of the Australian Cryptology Society (ACISP 2016). In addition, he is a member of the Steering committee of ASIACRYPT and a director of the Cryptography Society of China. He has won the Outstanding Youth Award, the Scientific Exploration Award and the Youth Science and Technology Award of the Cryptography Society of China, and was selected as one of the Innovators of Privacy Computing Technology by MIT Technology Review. Since 2021, he has served as Program Director for Computer Science Division (John Hopcroft Class) of Zhiyuan College.
