Abstract
Starting with simple examples from ODE, we look at the stability of solutions, i.e. at the (non-)global existence of solutions and their asymptotic behavior. The concept of a Lyapunov function is introduced. Then we turn to PDE in bounded domains, in particular of mixed type. Finally the Cauchy problem (spatial domain being the whole space) is investigated, at the end leading to recent results for the hyperbolic compressible Navier-Stokes equations.
