Abstract

This report primarily discusses Professor Yan-Jun Shi's experience in obtaining his medical license in the United States, his clinical surgical training, and his medical practice, as well as his subsequent efforts in China. It covers his establishment of a Pediatric Liver Transplantation Center at top hospitals in China, including the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, his medical practice in pediatric liver transplantation, the implementation of charitable assistance for pediatric liver transplantation, the treatment of minority children from Xinjiang, and his contributions to promoting ethnic unity.

Bio

Professor Yanjun Shi is the Director of the Abdominal Organ Transplantation Center and the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. He is a licensed surgeon in the United States, a Senior Consultant in General Surgery, and a PhD supervisor. Prior to his return to China, he worked as a pediatric organ transplantation specialist at the renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, located in the "City of Organ Transplantation." He holds permanent medical licenses in the state of Pennsylvania, as well as medical licenses in Virginia and South Carolina. Professor Shi is qualified in adult liver, kidney, pancreas, and small intestine transplantation, pediatric liver and small intestine transplantation, and hepatobiliary surgery.

In October 2022, Professor Shi was recruited to Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine to establish the Abdominal Organ Transplantation Center, where he currently serves as its Director. In September 2023, he was also appointed Director of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Ruijin Hospital.

Clinical Contributions:

1. Professor Shi is one of the leading advocates of the second wave of pediatric liver transplantation in China. He founded the Pediatric Liver Transplantation Center at Ruijin Hospital and has significantly advanced the development of pediatric liver transplantation in China, reshaping the national landscape of pediatric liver transplant care.

2. He pioneered the charitable assistance model for pediatric liver transplantation in China, which has so far aided 133 children, with total financial assistance amounting to over 26 million RMB, generating significant social impact.

3. As one of the principal surgeons and administrators, Professor Shi successfully performed China’s first combined liver-lung transplantation.

Research Achievements: Professor Shi has published dozens of articles as the first author or corresponding author in top journals on liver and organ transplantation, including Journal of Hepatology, American Journal of Pathology, Liver Transplantation, BMC Genomics, and Cells. He has received numerous prestigious awards, such as the Outstanding Paper Award at the American Digestive Disease Week, the Distinguished Surgeon Honor from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Advanced Individual in Science Popularization from the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Guangci Clinical Technology Innovation Award from Ruijin Hospital.
