On May 13, 2026, the 309th ZY-INS Salon of Zhiyuan College was held on the afternoon of May 13, featuring Professor Zhang Xu of Sichuan University as the keynote speaker. Themed "Infinite-Dimensional Analysis," the lecture explored the mathematical structures, theoretical challenges, and frontiers of this advanced field.
Professor Zhang began by tracing the relationship between classical calculus and infinite-dimensional analysis. He noted that while calculus handles infinity through limiting processes and has led to a well-developed theory in finite-dimensional spaces, many important problems remain in infinite-dimensional spaces, where functions widely appear in control theory, probability, and quantum theory.

He then highlighted key differences between finite and infinite-dimensional spaces, including the absence of non-trivial translation-invariant measures, complex topological structures, and difficulties in function differentiation. To address these challenges, he introduced the extension of the Gauss–Green integral theory from finite to infinite dimensions, offering a new framework for infinite-dimensional geometric calculus.

During the interactive session, students raised questions on understanding infinite-dimensional spaces and their applications in computer science. Professor Zhang encouraged the audience to maintain curiosity about fundamental mathematics and to pursue deeper exploration in infinite-dimensional analysis.
