Cells are the basic units of all life. Bottom-up assembly of a living cell from scratches will not only demonstrate our understanding of life, but also create next-generation biotechnologies. Here I will present a microfluidic route to uniform, controllable artificial cell membrane systems, and then employ such artificial cell membranes to mimic cellular functions and behaviours. Lastly,  the chalk talk will briefly touch on the basis, development and future directions of synthetic cells from chemist’s perspectives.
