Synthetic dimensions in photonics, as newly developed concepts, have attracted of great interest in the optical society recently. The key idea is to utilize different kinds of degrees of freedom of light, to construct various synthetic lattice models, and then to study the dynamics of photons as well as emulate physical problems. In today’s talk, I will mainly introduce the basic concept of synthetic dimensions in photonics and their recent developments. I will also briefly tough different photonic emulation theories and experimental observations with synthetic dimensions on physics relevant to effective gauge fields, topological edge states, dynamic bands, localizations with the flatband, non-Abelian interferences, and etc. These researches develop the new direction for novel light manipulations with synthetic dimensions, time-varying media, and artificial optical materials.
