20th anniversary conference and academic forum of ACM class of SJTU successfully held Wenfang Fan 2023-04-24 1770

On April 8, 2023, the 20th Anniversary Conference and academic forum of ACM Class of SJTU were held in Science & Technology Innovation Building, Big Zero Bay.

 

Leaders of SJTU, and invited representatives from Shanghai University, Minhang District Committee, Wenhui Newspaper, Minhang District Science & Technology Committee, South Binjiang Investment & Development Co., LTD, Microsoft Research Asia, Huawei, ByteDance attended the ceremony. Representatives from Zhiyuan College, School of Electronic Information & Electrical Engineering, and relevant departments of SJTU also participated in the conference; together with over 170 alumni of ACM Class, nearly 130 enrolled CS students celebrated the event at home and abroad.

In the first session, Professor Xuemin Xu, Vice President of SJTU presided over the conference and reviewed the achievements of the ACM class in the past 20 years; On behalf of SJTU, Professor Kuiling Ding, President of SJTU expressed congratulations and greetings to all the faculty, students, and alumni of ACM class home and abroad; and also expressed his gratitude to the teachers, experts, scholars, and friends from various fields who have supported and contributed to the development of ACM class over the past 20 years. 

 

As the President of SJTU when ACM class just founded, Professor Shengwu Xie reviewed the reform and exploration of SJTU’s teaching reform on the Pilot Class in 1985 and the glorious moments when the ACM team won the world championship three times in 2002, 2005, and 2010.

 

Representing the government of Minhang district, Deputy Chief Liang Zhao mentioned, the Minhang government is willing to provide more support to promote the collaborations with SJTU and ACM class, and jointly promote the sustainable development of Science and Technology of Shanghai.

 

At the same time, the organizing committee of the commemorative ceremony presided outstanding contribution awards to individuals and groups who have made tremendous contributions to de development of the ACM class over the past 20 years.   

 

The second session was presided over by Professor Mei Hong, Secretary of General Party Branch Committee of Zhiyuan College. Since 1996, the ACM team and APEX lab were established for 26 years, and SJTU has decided to establish the ACM and APEX Alumni Association, and award the appointment letter to the first board member. 

 

In the third session, Professor Junliang Zhang, Executive Deputy Dean of Zhiyuan College presided over the conference. Academician Wang Jian, known as the father of "cloud computing" in China, delivered a speech on "A Class and an Era" to tell the story of his connections with the ACM Class.

 

Professor John Hopcroft, Turing Award Winner, shared his views on undergraduate computer science education in China and the United States.

 

Professor Yong Yu gave a speech titled "My Students and Me", shared the stories of three ACM girls, and put forward his three dreams: first, to give all ACM alumni a “home”; second, to find a successor who can discover students' talents; third, he hopes to overturn traditional education with technology in the future, so as to open a new page of Chinese education.

 

After the meeting, the first board meeting of ACM&APEX Alumni Association of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was held. Professor Yong Yu introduced the council members. After the panel discussion and approval of the university, Yong Yu was appointed as the Honorary President of ACM&APEX Alumni Association, Erdong Chen as overseas Vice president, Duo Ding as overseas Vice Secretary-General, Haofen Wang as domestic Vice president, Weinan Zhang as domestic Vice Secretary-General; and Weiliang Xia, Associate President of Zhiyuan College, and Guangtao Xue, the Vice President of School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering were appointed as the consultants. The first board members are composed by alumni representatives, including Hao Yuan, Erddong Chen, Teng Ren, Yulong Luo, Duo Ding, Weinan Zhang, Guirong Xue, Haofen Wang.

 

Three alumni academic sub-forums, namely artificial intelligence, computer theory and computer security, were held respectively, among which the artificial intelligence forum was open to Nanbinjiang Investment and Development Co., LTD., Big Zero Bay Scientific Innovation enterprises, etc. Bingkai Lin, Professor of Nanjing University (class of 2006), Diyi Yang, Assistant Professor of Stanford University (class of 2009), Cheng Chen, Associate Professor of East China Normal University (class of 2009), Zhengyang Liu, Assistant Professor of Beijing Institute of Technology (class 2009), Jingcheng Liu, Associate Professor of Nanjing University (class of 2010), Peihan Miao, Assistant Professor of Brown University (class of 2010), Shanghai Jiao Tong University Assistant Professor Kwan Yang (class of 2011) and others shared their thoughts and discoveries.
