On November 14, 2020, the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of Zhiyuan College (Zhiyuan) and Institute of Natural Sciences (INS) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is successfully held in the JingJing Auditorium at Minhang Campus of SJTU.

The anniversary is hosted by Xu Xuemin, Vice President for Education of SJTU and Dean of Zhiyuan College, and Zhang Junliang, Executive Deputy Dean of Zhiyuan College. Professor Lin Zhongqin, President of SJTU and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhang Jie, Director of Academic Committee of SJTU, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Honorary Dean of Zhiyuan College, Ding Kuiling, Executive Deputy President of SJTU and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with other distinguished guests from the other schools of SJTU and partner universities attended the grand anniversary.

The anniversary was released as a live webcast and a total number of 12,800 people at home and abroad watched it online. More than 70 alumni and friends have sent congratulatory messages, letters and videos to Zhiyuan. The video on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Zhiyuan College and Institute of Natural Sciences was also premiered.

Lin Zhongqin first delivered a speech, expressing warm congratulations to all teachers, students and alumni at home and abroad and giving his sincere gratitude to people from all walks of life who have supported the development of SJTU, Zhiyuan and INS. He reviewed the remarkable achievements achieved by Zhiyuan and INS on the cultivation of top-notch talents and interdisciplinary research in the past ten years and then also proposed some future expectations.

Zhang Junliang made an introduction on Zhiyuan College, such as its outstanding achievements in the past ten years and some infinite possibilities of its future development. He stressed that talent is the foundation of development. Zhiyuan will persist in cultivating top-notch and innovative talents who are willing to go beyond, inclusive, original, fearless of challenges, benevolent and respectful, so as to make greater contributions to the academic exchange and scientific research development of SJTU.

Jin Shi, Dean of INS has also made an introduction. He reviewed the rapid development of INS, expressed deep appreciation towards the strong support of SJTU and meanwhile INS had also greatly promoted the construction and development of mathematics subject of SJTU.

Zhang Jie made an academician report, reviewing the prosperous years of the growth of Zhiyuan and INS, and emphasized the essence of a research-oriented university, which is to bring a group of highly innovative people together so as to generate wisdom and innovation through the collision of brilliant and inspiring thoughts. He stressed that university education shall pay more attention to inspire students' curiosity and personality cultivation, and the root vitality lies in innovation. He hoped that the teachers, students and alumni of Zhiyuan and the INS could keep innovating to cope with the changes in the world and keep moving forward to pursue new glory.

Academician E Weinan also delivered a speech, presenting a wonderful interpretation of the development of interdisciplinary science and applied mathematics. He mentioned that applied mathematics does not have a systematic teaching system and it is now facing the unprecedented developmental opportunities.

Worldwide leading academic masters and invited lecturers of Zhiyuan such as Nobel Prize Laureate Anthony Leggett and Turing Award Winner John Hopcroft also sent warm and sincere congratulations towards the establishment of Zhiyuan, and expressed their hope for a more splendid development towards Zhiyuan, as well as eagerness to return to SJTU to lecture Zhiyuan students and witness their growth.   

The 10th Anniversary is not only a review of the history of Zhiyuan and INS, but also a clarion call to sustainable developments. Zhiyuan and INS will shoulder the responsibility of the times, make remarkable contributions to the future development of SJTU, higher education cause of China and even to the worldwide higher education progresses, in order to truly serve the society and benefit mankind.
