On October 14, 2025, Yuan Jiaxing, a Zhiyuan Physics graduate (class of 2016) and Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), returned to Zhiyuan and delivered an insightful academic lecture titled "Phase Separation Phenomena in Soft Matter Systems."

Yuan's research delves into the unique world of soft matter, where phase separation behaves differently from simple systems like oil and water. He introduced the concept of "viscoelastic phase separation," a dynamic process that forms transient network structures, contrasting with static equilibrium. His presentation bridged everyday examples and complex systems like polymer solutions and protein liquids, using molecular simulations to reveal the underlying physical mechanisms.
During the interactive session, Yuan connected his research to broader applications, theoretical frontiers, and career development. Drawing from his own path—from a doctoral student at SJTU to postdoctoral research at the University of Tokyo, and now leading his own research group—he advised students to "cultivate deep expertise while maintaining a broad, collaborative vision."

The lecture served as both a deep dive into soft matter physics and a roadmap for scientific growth, illustrating how a research path, much like the materials he studies, can take defined shape through dynamic exploration.
